Closet Dread

My friend Kary recently shared a "flow chart" designed to help make those tough decisions in life...

Question 1: Does this make me look taller-yes...buy it. No, go to question 2.

Question 2: Does this make me look thinner-yes...buy it. No, go to question 3.

Question 3: Does this make me richer-yes...buy it. No, skip it all together.
So just remember: Taller, Thinner or Richer and you have the magic formula.

I wish I had known this before I made half of the purchases that are now hanging in my closet.

Here is my dream, that I could open the door to that dreaded place and have 5-10 outfits hanging there that made me look "all of the above". Fabulous, confidence building fantastic outfits that I loved to wear. Instead, I open the door and have the following choices:

1. Jeans that have mysteriously "shrunk" while laying on the shelf over the past year. I mean really; does something happen to the composition of cotton fibers over time? Or is it that my closet has a built in shrinking mechanism like a very hot dryer?

2. Sweaters and t-shirts that were perfect 3 years ago when you didn't have to wear a hip length tee. This means it's time to say goodbye to 90% of my sweaters and t-shirts.

3. Ski wear. Now I admit that I have some good choices in this category and since in Montana you can wear fleece for any occasion these are the pieces that most often end up on my body instead of in a heap on the floor. However, the mombod sees trouble on the horizon. My calculations only allow for another month of weather that will allow me to hide inside over sized pullovers. If anyone has a great source for reasonably priced cute "hip" fashions be sure to post.

I will admit my latest fashion envy item is a pair of shoes by Dansko or Sanitas http://www.zappos.com/product/7423663/color/11

I tried them on and they make me look both thinner and taller.

  1. I am proud to say that on my 44th bday today I slipped into a new pair of skinny jeans that di not fit a week ago. I've lost 5 pounds in a week on the chocolate diet! 5 more to go! I feel good! - BQ

  2. I'm in girl! I'm starting my diet next Wednesday and I'm giving myself 1 month to loose at least 5 pounds before my families vacation to Hawaii! We should have weekly weigh-in's. I'll post my weight weekly and PLEASE feel free to ridicule me if I don't loose any weight each week - I need public humiliation to motivate me!

  3. Go for the Danskos...mine are kind to my arthritic feet and make me taller, for sure. I was just bemoaning my dull wardrobe. In Sweden the answer is H&M or Zara for inexpensive and trendy clothes...have you got one of those in Big Sky :)?

  4. There will be no ridiculing of anyone! I will start a Biggest Loser Competion next week. I'll send out all the details and anyone who wants in can join. We'll all weigh ourselves (no need to share) and then let the group know what our goal in pounds is. Maybe we could all pool $5 so the winner could buy a new item for the wardrobe.
Hmmm...H&M and Zara. Maria, where do you think I live?... Love H&M (will visit in MN) Big Sky doens't even have a Subway.

  5. Closet dread is the story of my life these days...I started an 8 week program at the gym 2 weeks ago and am meeting weekly with a nutritionist and trainer. It's the only way I can even THINK of putting a swim suit or even shorts on this summer! Argh! Kirsten-I'd love to have YOUR bod as my "after"! I can't imagine you losing 14 pounds...
